As part of the celebrations of the Coronation of King Charles III, Kingscroft Bowls club held a tournament on Sunday, 7 May 2023, starting at 2.00pm.

The rules were based on the Bowls England Big Bash – the jack was always placed on the “T” so that bowling distance was adjusted by moving the mat. Scoring was Three, two, one plus a point for touching the jack. A jack in the ditch would be replaced back on the “T” and all woods in the ditch were dead. There would be 4 sets of 5 ends, all picked at random and the entry fees distributed back as prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Entries were open to all members, plus guests and at one point. there were 27 names on the list. However, after cancellations and no shows, the final total was 19 bowlers.

There was a wide range of abilities on show – from International right through to absolute beginner – and when the final scores were in, every bowler had managed to score points.

The weather was glorious and the club had been decorated with Union flags and bunting so looked very festive.

Trish Tams had been busy with the knitting needles and had made a spider to be the prize for the bowling spider – donations for Disability Bowls England. Well done to Teg for walking away with the prize. Trish had also knitted crowns to cover chocolate oranges. These were sold with proceeds going to DBE.

The tournament started and for the next couple of hours, the sound of laughter and encouragement permeated across the green.

After 20 ends, the score cards were collected and a winner found. The scores were close but the winner on 40 was Helen Lewis-Wall, second on 39 was Darren Delahay, and after a one wood play off, Jenny Pearson came third on 38, the same score as David Orton.

Overall, the tournament was a success and a fitting way to celebrate the Coronation of a new King and Queen. Thanks to all the bowlers for taking part and for making the event so much fun.
